Jared Anderson Analysis: Young fighter trying to grow in boxing
2019 saw Anderson, a two-time gold medallist at the U.S. National Championship, join with Top Rank. The 24-year-old won the NABF heavyweight championship in 2021 by defeating Vladimir Tereshkin. For the first time going the distance, in July 2023, he defeated Charles Martin by unanimous vote. In August, Anderson prevailed over Andriy Rudenko through technical knockout. Prior to the altercation, Anderson was involved in a police pursuit in which he reached a top speed of 130 mph. In a different occasion, he again handled firearms inappropriately while aware that he was intoxicated. Critics think he’s not serious about boxing or about setting an example for young people. Anderson is continuing despite his legal troubles, no matter how contentious the circumstances.
Ryad Merhy Analysis: Looking to continue his journey in the division
After losing to Arsen Goulamirian in 2018 as a cruiserweight contender, Merhy eventually made the switch to heavyweight in 2022. In May 2023, Merhy dropped a decision against Kevin Lerena, another former cruiserweight. However, he returned in December and defeated Tony Yoka in a split decision. Now, Merhy has 26 KOs and is 32-2. And this bout with Anderson is crucial if he hopes to advance at heavyweight. Merhy’s power isn’t quite as great as Anderson’s, but it’s still close considering that 81.3% of his victories, including 5 of his last six, have come via stoppage.
